English ICTS conversations

    Dear and fellow ICTS members,


    Hereby I announce ICTS's own English conversation thread.


    The conditions for joining this thread are simple and are as following:

    • Thou shall speak correct English
    • Thou shall respect ICTS's regulations


    Violation of those terms can result into deletion or modification of your post.


    This thread has been made to stimulate the English fluency of our dear members and to get some change on the website.


    My own personal motivation for this thread is that I am trying for years to achieve native English fluency. This quest has still not met its end. On the contrary, I'm in the middle of it.
    So please join the conversation and enjoy!


    To kickoff:
    As of today I decided to quit my PHP framework project and instead use CodeIgniter. Reason is that creating the framework takes too much time and I would love to create several projects. This choise was encouraged by the use of the Play framework. The project I will work on now will contain at least: CodeIgniter(php), Backbone (js), jQUery (js), Node.js (js). If any of you has any remarks on this, please let me know!


    Otherwise, tell something interesting!

    Well yeah thjeu it is a Dutch community but it has an .com domain, so it would be a real dutch community if everything on it was dutch so inclusive the domain extension.

    Thjeu, why not simply use the core system of Wordpress itself? Why would you require a framework for that?
    Wordpress on itself could already be called a framework.


    The benefit of speaking like this is that you will gain more skill in English fluency. For the rest you might call it having fun.


    What Hamza said is correct. The .com extension is not related to any country or language. However, as it is for global use, websites with .com often tend to speak English. There are exceptions of course, certainly websites that have a name that is written in their native language.

    I would say even more.
    In Belgium at least, it is very very important to know English and to speak/write it fluently!


    In my current job, I continuously speak and write in English - even though we are a Flemish company.
    The reason is that we have a few non-Flemish developers in-house, that's why we made English the mother language of our company.

    Tim the benefit of a framework is that it has functions like responsiveness, a good SEO structure, build in jquery functions etc. All of these features are not build within wordpress.


    I now make use of the foundation framework of zurb. It has all these nice features and it also makes use of Sass/scss. Therefor it is now an easy job to create in the back-end of wordpress a font chooser, color switcher etc.


    Also it has a standard programmed template, so the developing time of websites is much shorter now.

    an English conversation thread? Rather funny if you think the backbone of the community can be configured to allow split content for every language (say English / Dutch). So one thread is not necessary and if you want to reach out to the English side of the programming you need allot more content then this.


    However it is possible to attract more English developers if you release a English version of a crime game, otherwise English people will stay away because of the reason that there are already ALLOT of English developing community's.

    I was aware of this. The mere purpose of why I created this thread is desribed in the main post. And please do not feel offended, but you are a great example. Your post contains multiple basic grammar mistakes. For example writing then instead of than. Using a instead of an.


    For those who want to achieve at least professional English fluency, the only remedy is practicing. If you feel no need for this or if you do not see the fun of this, then please bear in mind that you are not obligated at all to join the conversation.

    You just made me laugh about the fact the you sign your post. Using "Yours sincerely" in this kind of context? Common I know the grammatical errors I make but nevertheless I can make my self clear in the English language and that is the main point of my English usage.


    Next to that fact that you want to try people to learn English with one thread? You can not even learn the basics of English if you want by reading one thread. But okay if you want to swing like that fine by me you don't need to get all upset about it :)

    I agree with Tim. Everone should be able to speak English. You're not going to change this with one thread. However, if we can make a nice conversation, people will join and practise with us. Every bit helps I guess.


    I do have one question though. Why use "Yours sincerely"? Since this is a rather informal thread I'd say "Take care" or "Kind regards". Well.. I guess it's a personal thing.

    I always end my mails with 'Kind regards'. :)


    I just finished writing my SWOT analysis in English.
    If you don't know what a SWOT is, it's where you look at yourself and fill in elements for each point:
    Strengths
    Weaknesses
    Opportunities
    Threats
    Always a challenge to look at your bad points. :S


    That reminds me of following exercise:
    Try to write for yourself, on a piece of paper, in 2 minutes time as many feelings you know as possible.
    Most men can only write about 5 feelings, it's incredible difficult, but there are a lot of feelings.
    Goal of this exercise: become a better negotiator. :)
    Once you know all kind of feelings, it's easier to spot them in the people around you. :thumbup:

    Victor, as you might have noticed I always end with "Mvg" in Dutch. In my opinion this equals "Yours sincerely". My e-mails also end like that.
    This all has to do with that I want to be professional. One way for me do achieve this is by being formal. In case I would write to English friends I indeed might use kind regards, which has my preference.


    Koen, at school I was also forced to create a SWOT. It is indeed very interesting, however what my school is doing wrong is that you need to check and update your SWOT regularly.
    Don't forget to do so!


    And on a different note:
    Just installed Windows 8 for 15 Euro. To get a 15 Euro discount is fairly easy. Simply get a promo code from Microsoft. This can been done by registering your computer at Microsoft as an after June the 2nd computer.


    Instalation went smoothly for me. However, the new start interface is far from user friendly for me. The flows are badly made. Also that you need to put your cursor in a corner is amazingly disturbing. It is clearly noticable that Windows 8 is far from compliant with three monitors.

    Being professional is not equal to writing formal. In the IT branch, more and more companies try to be less formal, and have more interaction with customers and colleagues. The formal way of interaction somehow creates a non personal atmosphere in the company, which leads to 'throw it over the fence' way of working.


    In Agile-teams, you want people working closely together. Being less formal fits better in that kind of situations. Of course, companies still use waterfall and waterfall like software development methods, but informal communication is more and more popular.

    So what are the benefits to write or read on the english section ?


    The questions asked so far do belong in a diffrent section of the forum.


    As far as I'm concerned this section doesn't have any potential.
    Taken, that I'm a new member of this forum yet havent seen any english members.

    There are a number of mistakes in your post, so you're actually writing your own answer. You have to see this thread as a learning oppertunity. If you're going to work for a company abroad, it's useful to speak Englisht to a certain degree. You don't want your customers having to decipher everything you say.

    It's called college.


    If your future lays in traveling around other country's, overseas or not your college should fund you with english/spanish/chinese/arabian classes.

    My study obligates her students to master at least the European B2 standard. However, this does not mean that the English of some students can be called "good".
    Especcialy the spoken fluency is terrible.


    Now, not everyone can enjoy bachelor degree or higher. A lot of students only reach out to college (MBO). There the required skill level is lower. Please do not mention that highschool should have given its students enough skill. Because I feel ashamed for my country that the English is so bad.


    Even though you enjoyd IBL, I can see mistakes in your post. ;)


    To give you a indication:
    Soon I will do a minor English. Also, on both my job it is required to talk English. At TomTom Taxi it is even the working language. And if I compare the Dutch speakers with people from abbroad, the Dutch their English really tend to fall behind.


    Btw, you might find typos. This was all writte on a cellphone.

    Are you mentally challenged?
    As a AAA country and leading front for most business plans and even having one of the best university's in Europe?


    Please tell me, how ashamed are you of your country ?
    Just cause most people cant perform a decent english accent means their english is terrible??
